Celebrate World Rainforest Day on June 22nd with Fun Educational Activities

Need some fun June activities to keep your kids or students busy during the summer? June 22nd is World Rainforest Day, a perfect opportunity to engage students in learning about the importance of rainforests and the incredible biodiversity they support. From the lush canopies to the vibrant floor, rainforests are teeming with life and valuable lessons. Here are some creative activities to celebrate World Rainforest Day across various subjects.

Language Arts

Rainforest Poetry

Have students write a poem about the rainforest. Encourage them to use descriptive language and sensory details to bring the rainforest to life. Provide prompts such as "Imagine you are walking through a rainforest, what do you see, hear, smell, and feel?"

Math

Rainforest Measurement and Data

Create a worksheet with pictures of different rainforest animals and their lengths. Have students measure the lengths and compare them. For example, "If a jaguar is 6 feet long and a toucan is 2 feet long, how much longer is the jaguar than the toucan?"

Extension: Graph the heights of different rainforest trees and compare them.

Science

Rainforest Layers Exploration

Teach students about the four layers of the rainforest: emergent, canopy, understory, and forest floor. Provide materials for them to create a diorama that shows these layers and the types of plants and animals found in each.

Social Studies

Rainforest Mapping

Provide students with a blank world map and information about where major rainforests are located, such as the Amazon in South America, the Congo Basin in Africa, and the Southeast Asian rainforests. Have students label these rainforests on the map and color them in. Include a legend that identifies each rainforest and provides a few key facts about it.

Extension: Discuss the countries that these rainforests are located in and how these countries are working to protect them. Students can write a short report or create a presentation about one of the countries and its conservation efforts.

Art

Rainforest Animal Masks

Provide materials for students to create masks of their favorite rainforest animals. They can use paper plates, paint, markers, and other craft supplies. Have a "Rainforest Parade" where students wear their masks and share facts about their chosen animals.

Music

Rainforest Sounds

Teach students about the different sounds of the rainforest. Play recordings of rainforest sounds and have students identify the animals or natural elements making each sound. Then, create a "rainforest soundscape" using instruments and objects to mimic these sounds.

Physical Education

Rainforest Adventure

Set up an obstacle course that represents a journey through the rainforest. Include activities like "swinging" on ropes (jump ropes laid on the ground), "climbing" over fallen trees (gym mats), and "crawling" through underbrush (tunnels).

Health

Rainforest Nutrition

Explore the fruits and vegetables that come from rainforests, such as bananas, cacao (chocolate), and avocados. Discuss their nutritional benefits and create a healthy rainforest-inspired snack.

Extension: Create a recipe book featuring rainforest ingredients.

World Rainforest Day Worksheets

I've created a couple worksheets suitable for 2nd-grade students to celebrate this day. Check them out here.

World Rainforest Day is an excellent opportunity to bring the wonders of the rainforest into the classroom. By incorporating activities across various subjects, students can gain a deeper understanding of the importance of rainforests and the incredible biodiversity they support. Let's make learning an adventure as we celebrate World Rainforest Day!
