Do you have a dog in your home? When I was younger, we always had a dog. I don't currently have any due to my husband's allergies, but it doesn't mean I don't have a soft spot for them!

National Dog Day was started in 2004 by Colleen Paige as a day to celebrate our furry dog friends and also educate others about the amount of dogs still waiting for fur-ever homes in shelters. It is an official holiday in New York, but also celebrated around the world. I hope you enjoy some of the ideas I have for you to celebrate in your classrooms and at home. Make sure you read to the end to find a link to a freebie I've created!

1. Visit a Shelter

What better way to celebrate this day than to visit a local animal shelter! This may not be feasible if you are in a classroom setting as it's a bit late notice, but if you are homeschooling or celebrating with your own kids this would be a great day to go. If you are able, maybe even schedule to go in and volunteer! If you aren't able to go in to a shelter, you can watch this short video clip that talks about animal shelters.

2. Make Doggy Treats

If you have a dog of your own, you can make them some dog treats! Make sure you keep in mind their particular dietary needs before you choose any of the following items.

      1. This kids baking kit would be a fun activity to do together. I think it's so cute that the treats             look like hot dogs!

    2. This pupsicle kit is a lot less time consuming and perfect for the hot weather.

    3. What a better way to celebrate a special day than a cake! It even comes with a bone shaped             mold.

    4. If your dog already has a favorite treat recipe, you can use this dog treat maker.

3. Dog Arts & Crafts

There are so many different arts and crafts you could do together! Get out your art supplies and make some artwork featuring your dog, or favorite dog breed. There are also some cute craft kits on Amazon.

1, This Klutz Pom-Pom Puppy kit is adorable! It says it's best for ages 8 and up.

    2. I'm not sure what age range this sequin art is for. Probably about the same as the pom-pom kit.

    3. Why not let your pet join in on the fun with this paw print kit

    4. My daughter actually has this Scribble Scrubbie Pets set. It's great for ages 3 and up.

4. Read a Book (or Books)

I wanted to make sure to add some resources that I have available and the books that go with them. If you have any kids that like mysteries, the Jack Russell: Pet Detective is a good book series for them. I've created a book study to go along with The Phantom Mudder. You can get the book here

There are so many other books that are great for learning about dogs, or just reading a fun dog story. A trip to the library would be fun, so everyone can find a stack of good dog books!

5. National Dog Day Freebie!
