As summer vacation draws to an end here where I live, we have a fun week to look forward to. I won't use the actual trademarked name....but it rhymes with Shark Freak. I have a few resources from my store to share, as well as some fun things you can buy off of Amazon. (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.)
You can celebrate sharks whenever you want, but the end of summer vacation (when it's still sweltering hot) seems like a perfect time to have some water fun. I'm actually not a fan of the beach (don't hate me), so all of these water activities can be enjoyed at home (although you'll want a pool for some of them).
Water Play
1. This
sprinkler is great for some outdoor fun if you don't have a pool.
2. If you have a pool and kids that can swim, these
shark diving toys are fun. Throw them into the water and have a shark hunt to see who can dive down to get the most.
3. Kids can pretend to be a hungry shark with this shark grabber toy. This would be great for a pool, bath, or water table.
4. This baby shark is a cute toy for little ones to play with in the tub. It swims and plays the baby shark song when placed in the water.
5. Relax in the pool with this shark pool float. It would make for a fun game of Marco, Polo where the person inside the float has to find the others.
6. This last item is for those who want to go all out with the shark theme! This water slide is perfect for little kids to play on. One reviewer even said they used it inside without the water!
Shark Books
I can't talk about shark activities without mentioning some good shark books! No matter the age, there are some great shark books available!
1.
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Shark by Jeffrey Burton is a cute board book with a twist on a popular nursery rhyme. You can see a preview of the book on Amazon.
3.
Clark the Shark by Bruce Hale is a good choice if you're getting ready to go back to school. It is about a shark that learns how to control his behavior in school.
4.
The Ultimate Book of Sharks by Brian Skeery is geared towards elementary students, but has engaging photographs that all ages will enjoy.
6. There are so many great shark books, but I'm including another book similar to #2. This one is
Shark Lady: True Adventures of Eugenie Clark by Ann McGovern. This book is best for ages 7-10 and goes into more details about the life of Eugenie Clark. I included this one specifically, because I have the perfect resource to compliment it if you are a homeschooling family, or using these ideas for your classroom.
This resource has 13 pages of questions, one for each chapter of the book. It is great for guided reading, center work, homework, or even an assessment. If you are familiar with EASEL on TpT, you may be happy to hear this comes in EASEL format as well!
School Supplies
Learning about sharks can be made even more fun with some sharky supplies! These items would be fun to give out to a classroom, or to your kids as a special treat to make learning a little more fun!
1. These
shark tooth sharpeners are dual purpose! Not only do they have a sharpener, but they also have an eraser. They also look pretty cool since they're shaped like a shark tooth. It's actually a pack of 24, not just 2.
3. Okay, I know these
shark finger puppets may not look like a school supply, but I think they would be great as pointers while reading! It comes in a pack of 6 which would make it a good amount for a reading group.
5. A
shark composition notebook could be used to take notes as you study about sharks. Have your kids keep a journal of everything that they did during the week (or longer) that you study sharks. They could keep note of questions that they want to research more, and also what they have learned.
Fine Motor Skills
There are so many different activities that it is hard to choose just a few. I've separated them into fine motor and gross motor activities. Keep in mind the age and ability of your child(ren) when choosing activities.
4. Help build up hand strength with this squishy, stretchy
sea animals.
5. This
shark puzzle is fun and educational! It shows the names of many shark species next to realistic illustrations.
Gross Motor Skills
Need some good gross motor activities for the week. Hopefully these products will help you out some.
3. Take the sharks to the sky with this
kite!
Toys & Games
Have fun learning about sharks with these educational toys and games.
1. This
Sharkopoly game has different shark names for the properties. Maybe pick a few to study during the week as well!
2.
Shark toys are great for a variety of activities! Freeze them in some ice and play with them outside. Set up some water beads for some imaginative play. Older kids can use them to make an ocean diorama.
3. Practice number and color recognition with a game of
Shark UNO.
5. Okay, this isn't really educational, but this
shark is too cute not to add. It's big too (over 2 feet long)!
I could seriously go on with more fun items, but I'll stop it here. I will share one more resource from my store, though. This
shark themed pack has different activities for pre-k through 1st grade. It would be a great addition to your shark themed fun. Check out the link above for more details.
Thanks for hanging around! I LOVE researching items to go with fun themes. Leave me a comment below if you have a theme in mind. I just may make another themed pack soon.
